The Volkswagen Golf R is about to undergo a significant increase in power and is set to become the most powerful production Golf in history!

According to an Autocar report, the next generation Golf R, which should go on sale early in 2014, would see its power go from 256 to 286 horsepower and torque increase from 243 to 280 foot-pounds – still usin the same turvocharged four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine.

This additional muscle and a reduction in weight resulting from the use of lightweight materials that will make it weigh in at 1 200 kg is said to make the Golf R able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds. That’s great news, but there’s more: All this would be done without increasing fuel consumption, which is also said to be improved.

The Volkswagen Golf R will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
