Audi’s research and development boss Wolfgang Dürheimer confessed in an interview that he would like to develop a car consuming 1 L / 100 km.

A crazy idea, you say? Not so much! Remember that Volkswagen will soon produce the XL1 – a futuristic two-seater prototype plug-in hybrid that can achieve such efficiency without problem – in limited numbers.

What’s more surprising is that Audi is thinking of getting there using the A1 platform, which would make the car able to comfortably seat four people. A plug-in hybrid powetrain would get the nod, while the lightweight materials would be used to reduce weight and therefore increase its fuel economy figures.

However, Wolfgang Dürheimer also said that the project had not been approved by Audi yet.
